Homemade Hawaiian Rolls
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 1 cup pineapple juice
- 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 3 1/2 - 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
For the Egg Wash:
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
Instructions:
1. Proof the Yeast:
-
In a microwave-safe bowl, warm the pineapple juice and milk together until they are slightly warm but not hot. The temperature should be around 110°F (43°C).
-
Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the warm liquid and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
2. Mix the Dough:
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter and granulated sugar. Mix until well combined.
-
Add the yeast mixture to the bowl and stir to combine.
-
Gradually add 3 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour and the salt. Mix until the dough starts to come together.
-
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, adding more flour as needed, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
3. First Rise:
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours or until it has doubled in size.
4. Shape the Rolls:
-
Punch down the risen dough to release the air.
-
Divide the dough into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a round ball by tucking the edges underneath.
-
Place the dough balls in a greased 9x13-inch baking pan, spacing them evenly.
5. Second Rise:
- Cover the pan with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let the dough balls rise for an additional 45 minutes to 1 hour, until they have doubled in size and are touching each other.
6. Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) during the last 15 minutes of the second rise.
7. Prepare the Egg Wash:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to make the egg wash.
8. Bake the Rolls:
-
Gently brush the tops of the risen rolls with the egg wash.
-
Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped.
9. Cool and Serve:
-
Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
-
Serve the Homemade Hawaiian Rolls warm or at room temperature.
