Classic Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients:

2 1/2 pounds russet potatoes (about 5-6 medium-sized potatoes)
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 to 3/4 cup whole milk or heavy cream (adjust to desired consistency)
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: Chopped fresh chives or parsley for garnish
Instructions:

1. Prepare the Potatoes:

Peel the potatoes and rinse them under cold water to remove any dirt.
Cut the potatoes into evenly sized chunks to ensure they cook evenly.

2. Boil the Potatoes:

Place the potato chunks in a large pot and add enough cold water to cover them by about an inch.

Add a generous pinch of salt to the water.

Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and let the potatoes simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until they are fork-tender. The exact cooking time may vary depending on the size of the potato chunks.

3. Drain the Potatoes:

Once the potatoes are fork-tender, drain them in a colander and return them to the pot.

4. Mash the Potatoes:

Using a potato masher or a potato ricer, start mashing the potatoes to break them down.

Add the softened butter to the mashed potatoes and continue mashing until the butter is fully incorporated.

5. Add Milk or Cream:

Slowly add the whole milk or heavy cream to the mashed potatoes, starting with 1/2 cup.

Continue mashing or stirring the potatoes until the milk or cream is fully absorbed and the desired creamy consistency is achieved. Add more milk or cream as needed.

6. Season the Mashed Potatoes:

Season the mashed potatoes with salt and black pepper to taste. Adjust the seasoning according to your preference.

7. Serve:

Transfer the creamy mashed potatoes to a serving bowl.

If desired, garnish with chopped fresh chives or parsley for added color and flavor.

Enjoy your classic and creamy Mashed Potatoes! This versatile side dish is perfect for any occasion, from family dinners to holiday feasts. It complements a variety of main courses and is loved by both kids and adults. Bon appétit!
